Medical Externship Program – Bridgeport Family Medicine

Bridgeport Family Medicine is an outpatient primary care and urgent care facility located in Bridgeport, CT. The externship provides direct exposure to real patient care in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Participants gain valuable experience in:

• Full-scope family medicine and primary care
• Same-day and urgent care visits
• Preventive care and chronic disease management
• Exposure to community-based healthcare

• Duration: 1 month (with option to extend up to 3 months)
• Initial shadowing followed by active clinical participation
• Supervised by experienced physicians
• Gradual transition from observation to hands-on care

This structure allows participants to gradually transition from observation to hands-on clinical involvement.

Externs actively participate in patient care under physician supervision.

Participants will:

• See and manage patients with a preceptor
• Improve physical examination and diagnostic skills
• Practice history taking and patient documentation
• Learn to use Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

Procedures include:

• EKG
• Phlebotomy
• Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
• Urinalysis (UA)

By the end of the program, participants will:

• Gain confidence in clinical decision-making
• Understand U.S. healthcare workflows
• Improve patient interaction and communication skills
• Stay updated on family medicine guidelines and best practices

Bridgeport Family Medicine offers exposure to specialized services including:

• Tick-borne disease management (Lyme, Babesia, Ehrlichia, Bartonella)
• Travel vaccines
• DOT physicals and drug testing
• Same-day urgent care services

This provides a well-rounded and unique learning experience, especially valuable in Connecticut where tick-borne illnesses are common.

Participants who complete the program receive:

• Certificate of completion
• Letter of recommendation from the supervising physician

These credentials can strengthen residency applications and professional profiles.
